DOHA: India’s visiting chief justice lauded a social organisation from Kerala for its community welfare
services here, but said he was surprised to hear of its achievements as Keralites were generally not known to
encourage constructive work.

Balakrishnan of his own community, to the embarrassment of many in the audience which mostly comprised
prominent Keralites in Doha.
The chief justice is here to take part in the Qatar Law Forum,
which opens today, and was given a reception by the Thrissur Jilla Souhrida Vedi yesterday.
His comments came while he praised the Vedi for providing succour to its low-income members from the
Thrissur district of the southern Indian state.

Ponnamabth, earlier in his welcome speech outlined the welfare programmes of the body and said a nominal
monthly pension was provided for two years to low-income members who returned home for good after quitting
their jobs or being laid off.
He said in the event of death of a low-income member, his
next of kin was paid Rs300,000 (QR24,000) within 15 days. Ponnambath also spoke of a landmark manufacturing
project launched back home with financing having been pooled in
by members.
The aim of the venture is to provide regular dividend income to less financially resourceful members of
the organisation as shareholders.
Among those present at yesterday’s event were the Indian
Ambassador, Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa, and the Vedi’s patron, C K Menon, a Doha-based Indian businessman known for
his philanthropist activities and entrepreneurial acumen.
